Eulogy for a Noble Heart...

My dog Walter passed away today.

He was a big boy with an even bigger heart. He was put together all wrong, but he was all about the love.

Walter was a Bernese Mountain Dog mixed with a Retriever. He had all the markings of the Bernese Mountain dog, but not the curly hair. Something like the Swiss Mountain Dog.

His favorite thing to do was to dive for rocks in the pond, lay in the sun and to carry his 'fish'.

He once mistook the word "Fish" for "Leash"...and ever since..Fish=Leash.

He would greet you at the door, but wagging his immense tail, and then promptly sit on your foot and look up at you and smile, just wanting you to pat him.

He was a wonderful dog, who was amazing with little kids--one of my fondest stories about Walter was with my cousin Iain. Iain was about 18 months old at the time and found Walter made a wonderful drum. I have pictures of Iain POUNDING on Walters side, and Walter just laid there smiling and wagging his tail.

Walter had a noble heart, a gentle soul and today he's gone.

You were my guardian, my buddy, I will miss you. Always.

[EDIT:] As a side note, we are planting a tree where we buried Walter, we have placed Bailey's ashes in the same spot. I will be making a memorial stone for that spot that says "Walter and Bailey's tree. A noble heart and an indomitable spirit."

I'm so sorry! :( He sounds like an amazing friend. I'm not one for creepy internets hugs, but I'm going to send you a whole bucket full!

You have my deepest condolences S. I understand what it means to lose a pet...a family member.
Rest in peace dear Walter.

I'm so sorry, dude.

Walter was a great big wonderful beast, and he will definitely be missed.

The tree planting and memorial is a great idea. My childhood dog was put down rather unceremoniously, and I kind of wish we'd done more of a tribute for him.

Thank you so much

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I am guilty of being something of a pushover when it comes to dogs...I 'get' the logic that they use, and I get closer to them that way.

Walter was nothing if not a noble friend, loyal to the last and a heart so big that it would stun you.

My sincere condolences. As an "owner" of three dogs, I know how much a part of the family they truly are. I offer you this quote, ironically from Sir Walter Scott:

I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?

I remember reading a few months ago about Walter sort of faltering and how concerned you were about it.
I have to agree with E on all the quotes.
It is nothing but painful to lose them. I miss my Cameo terribly even after two years. The pain never goes away.
my heart goes out to you and many hugssss
